The Heritage Softail Story
The Softail platform appeared in 1984, reviving the silhouette of a traditional hardtail motorcycle while concealing rear suspension. In 1986, Harley-Davidson introduced the Heritage Softail, drawing heavily on the appearance of late-1940s FL motorcycles, including the distinctive full fenders and broad front-end treatment.
The Heritage Softail Classic developed that idea with touring-oriented touches such as saddlebags, a windshield, passenger accommodation, and richly traditional trim. The balance of nostalgic detail and practical riding comfort helped make Heritage models enduring favorites.
Its appeal is not simply retro styling: the Heritage tells the story of Harley-Davidson translating classic American motorcycle design into a suspended, roadworthy machine suitable for leisurely rides and longer days in the saddle.
